TuneNoiseTune #5: HyperUniform / Rain No Rain

  • Four5Nine Bar 459 Fitzgerald Street North Perth, WA, 6006 Australia (map)

The Perth Jazz Society & Tone List's beloved series for avant-garde jazz and improvised music returns for its second season. The fifth concert in the series takes place at Bar Four5Nine on December 1, with doors opening at 7pm for a 7:30pm start. It features a double bill of HyperUniform (Gracie Smith - drums & Nathan Thompson - modular synthesizer), and Rain No Rain (Daniele Di Paola - drums, Kate Pass - double bass, Ronan Charles - piano & Ricki Malet - trumpet).

After a hyped set opening for Nika Mo's album launch in 2021, HyperUniform returns with unhinged intensity from two leading artists in noise and improvisation in Western Australia. Nathan Thompson, known for startling work at the intersection of experimental music, robotics and biological arts, clips triggers onto the drums of Gracie Smith (Tangled Thoughts of Leaving/The Noise & Vibration Council), whose virtuosic drumming combines the deftness of free jazz & improvisation with heavy-hitting sounds of avant-garde metal. The two sounds interact in human and post-human ways as the drums trigger shifts in the chaotic electronics. It's amazing.

Rain No Rain is the dash cam footage that you recovered from the car that you worked out belonged to you when you found some keys in your pocket. And then you sit on the steps and play it through. What a ride we had last night. Threading insane traffic, stopping for more drinks and friendly strangers at a bar in an unknown city and then parking to watch the sunrise before the batteries ran out. What the hell is this mess and where do we go from here? Well, it turns out we’re in a band called Rain No Rain and we’re booked at some place to play and I guess we’ll work it out then.

TuneNoiseTune is a co-presentation of Tone List and the Perth Jazz Society, and is proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries, and through the generosity of Carl Erbrich. Tone List and the Perth Jazz Society acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people as the custodians of the land on which we live and work and pay respects to Elders and custodians past, present & emerging.
