Young Women in Jazz Special featuring Ellen Kirkwood (Sydney)

Ellen Kirkwood will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 20 August.

Ellen Kirkwood is a trumpeter, composer, bandleader and teacher from Newtown, Sydney. Born in Port Macquarie, NSW, into a musical family, music has been her passion since she was very young. She studied Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium under many Australian Jazz greats including Mike Nock, Warwick Alder, Judy Bailey, Matt McMahon and Dale Barlow. In 2012 she won the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award for young Australian women in Jazz, including a recording at the Sydney ABC Studios, project funding, and performances in Sydney and Melbourne.

Ellen is a prolific composer who is rapidly gaining recognition for her imaginative writing style. Her debut album with sextet Captain Kirkwood released in 2013, named “Theseus and the Minotaur” featured a 5 part narrated music-story suite which received glowing reviews and critical acclaim. In 2015 she was commissioned by the Sydney Improvised Music Association and Ars Musica Australis to write “The Mieville Project”; a suite of narrated pieces set to excerpts by “weird fiction” author China Mieville, which was premiered at the 2015 Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival. She is currently studying composition with jazz luminary Barney McAll, after receiving a grant from the Australia Council of the Arts.

In addition to leading The Mieville Project and party band Fat Yahoozah, Ellen is also a member of world music/jazz crossover powerhouse Sirens Big Band, Matthew Ottignon’s Ethio-Jazz group Mister Ott, progressive rock/jazz/Zappa-esque band Facemeat, Gypsy-Punk outfit On The Stoop, and 1920’s Gypsy Jazz troupe Godfrey Uke and his Orchestra. Other notable Australian musicians Ellen has performed with include Sandy Evans, Paul Cutlan, Mike Nock, Greg Sheehan, Aaron Flower, Mohammed Youssef and Ben Walsh.

Kirkwood has been teaching trumpet, improvisation and composition, and directing high school stage bands and jazz ensembles since 2004.

Chris Sealey

Chris Sealey will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 19 July.

Christopher Sealey is a guitarist and composer performing across Australia since 2010 when he graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts’ undergraduate program. Christopher has worked as a professional musician for the past 5 years performing in Perth and Melbourne with various groups and projects, both as a leader and in supporting roles. Christopher was also accepted into the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City (2012) as a jazz guitar major.

Christopher has received critical acclaim not just as a guitarist but also as a composer, winning WAMi song of the year award for jazz instrumental 2010, as well as recording on and contributing arrangements to the 2014 Bell Award winning album Rise and Fall by Australian singer, Allira Wilson.

His sound is warm and generous with intensity throughout. Christopher performs here with not just a new electric trio but new compositions to debut. Don’t miss your chance to see this exciting guitarist.

A Tribute to Keith Jarrett & Paul Motian will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 26 July.

Keith Jarrett (piano) and Paul Motian (drums) share a highly expressive approach to jazz, and their music is often exotic and sublime. They came up in the late 1950s and went on to lead some of the most unique bands of the 20th century, using musicians from all over the world, and combining free-jazz, gospel, traditional folk songs, rock, post-bop, and classical music into their unmistakable brand of jazz. This show will feature arrangements of their compositions, and the band will explore their music through the lens of the 21st century. Expect it to range from beautiful folk melodies, to unrelenting modal jazz, to Cuban rumba rhythms, to eerie avant-garde classical, to earthy rock. Marc Osborne will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 12 July.

Marc is a talented and in demand saxophonist on the Perth music scene. Since graduating with Honours from WAAPA, Marc has been an integral part of many local ensembles as well as performing with the best jazz musicians in the country. Marc plays with a technical command and soulfulness rooted in the jazz tradition, yet the versatility of his approach makes him equally expressive in other styles.

For tonight’s gig, Marc will be presenting a new batch of compositions with a new quintet and some special guests.

Drummer and big band leader, John Morrison has delighted audiences for more than 25 years with his great sense of humour and dedication to sounds that swing. John has spent much of his music life playing and recording with his younger brother, world renowned trumpeter, James Morrison. John is excited to be returning to Perth to work with students at local schools with his partner in crime, vocalist Jacki Cooper. John and Jacki are thrilled to be performing at the Four5Nine Bar with local jazz stars, pianist Harry Mitchell and bassist Nick Abbey. The repertoire for the night will include everyone’s favorite standards, and will be accompanied by the occasional bad gag! Come and have some fun!

Joshua Hatcher Quintet (QLD)

Joshua Hatcher Quintet (QLD) will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 31 May.

Joshua Hatcher, accomplished saxophonist and composer from Queensland, has a swinging style rooted firmly in the blues tradition. He has performed with some of Australia’s finest musicians including Andrew Dickeson, Dale Barlow, Warwick Alder, Ben Hauptman and Danny Fischer.

Joshua has been selected as WAYJO’s 2016 composer-in-residence and will premier new large ensemble works at this year’s Perth International Jazz Festival.

His latest album ‘Now and Then’ includes two selections (‘Forgotten Languages’ and ‘The Room Next Door’) that are finalists in the jazz category at the 2016 Queensland Music Awards.

This performance at the Four5Nine Bar will feature original music from ‘Now and Then’ as well as some swinging standards.

The Persuasion

The Persuasion will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 24 May.

The Persuasion hit the Four5Nine stage for the first time on May 24th. Following up from their debut last year, this gig will include a large selection of new original music, due to be released later this year.

The Persuasion started as a creative outlet for Jackson Venables and Chris Travaglini, who began writing music influenced by the likes of Snarky Puppy, Soulive, Void, and Forq. Together with Joe Powell and Brodie Stewart, they played their first show at the Llama Bar in December and have been hard at work since.

With an exciting EP on the way, this gig will be a chance to experience the band in the beautiful intimate setting of the Four5Nine Bar, and get a first listen to their new tracks.

Luke Minness Quartet – ACS Winner

PJS Jazz Tuesdays presents the 2015 Alan Corbet Scholarship winner! Luke Minness will perform on 17 May from 7:30pm.

Luke Minness has recorded a number of original albums with groups like Fat Sparrow, Career Advice and Drapht while also landing a nomination for WAMI’s Best Jazz Composition (2015). Luke Minness is also a co-founder of the Perth Jazz Society Big Band debuting originally commissioned works from Vanessa Perica at the 2015 Perth International Jazz Festival.

Luke continues to record, release and perform music as both a leader and sideman around Perth today. He has performed, studied and recorded with artists like Ben Wendel, Troy Roberts, Mace Francis, Dane Alderson, Ed Partyka, Jim Mcneely, Joel Frahm, The Cat Empire, Drapht, Kristin Beradi and many others.

Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble

Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 10 May.

Kohesia Ensemble is Perth bassist and composer Kate Pass’ new project. This unique ensemble serves as a platform for Kate’s original compositions influenced by her passion for both jazz and Persian music. Inspired by artists such as Amir ElSaffar, Dhafer Youssef and Avishai Cohen, The Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble bridges the gap between East and West, exploring elements of Persian and Middle Eastern music in a jazz context.

Kate Pass is a bassist in high demand, performing locally and internationally in a variety of ensembles. Highlights include performing at WOMADelaide, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Playhouse Theatre in New York, Devonport Jazz Festival and Fleurieu Folk Festival. Kate also participated in WAYJO’s cultural exchange program, performing in Tokyo twice in 2014. She toured Australia this year with internationally renowned New York based Persian singer and setar player Mohsen Namjoo.

Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Group will perform for PJS Jazz Tuesdays at the Four5Nine Bar, Tuesday 3 May.

Two-time 2015 Australian Jazz Bell Award-winning drummer/composer Daniel Susnjar has performed/recorded with the likes of Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard and Bobby McFerrin, to name a few. Studying at the University of Miami Frost School of Music and earning his Doctoral degree in Afro-Peruvian rhythms applied to the drumset, Daniel is now considered an international authority in this field.

Daniel’s ensemble, consisting of elite WA-based musicians will be presenting music from his Award-winning debut album Su Su Nje, and from his follow-up album to released shortly. Included on his upcoming album is Daniel’s composition ‘Pius Bartosik,’ which has recently been awarded as the 2016 WAM jazz song of the year.

Jeremy Thomson, 22 from Perth, has been playing guitar since the age of 11. He has completed a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) Honours at the West Australian Academy of Performing arts during which time he won the award for the best graduation recital and highest course marks in his year.

In 2014 he was selected as a finalist for the National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. Artists Jeremy has performed with include, Joanna Wallfisch, Jamie Oehlers, Ben Vanderwal, Daniel Susnjar, Tom O’Halloran, Giorgio Rojas, Mark Fitzgibbon and many more.

Sean Little

Sean Little returned to Perth in mid-2015 after two years studying with the world’s finest musicians in New York. During his time at New York University, he studied with jazz legends Chris Potter, Mark Turner, Rich Perry, Alex Sipiagin and Kenny Werner. While in the US, Sean performed frequently, including dates at the iconic Blue Note Jazz Club.

Sean Little is joined by three of Perth’s jazz firebrands for Jazz Tuesdays; Harry Mitchell on keyboard, Karl Florisson on bass and Alex Reid on drums, and will present a compilation of newer and older original works, as well as modern music arrangements. This will be an exciting night of modern jazz that is not to be missed.

Interview Music is a trio comprised of Jeremy Thomson (guitar), Gabriel Fatin (keyboards) and Alex Reid (drums). Far from an average jazz trio, most of the repertoire is made up of pop songs that have been put through a rigorous deconstruction. They maintain the jazz aesthetic while exploring artists as diverse as Thom Yorke, Stevie Wonder, Tupac and Bruce Hornsby. Each song is given a transforming treatment, as the trio uses each element of the song as a plaything with endless possibilities. Using plenty of creativity, virtuosity and tongue-in-cheek humour, Interview Music is entertaining and engaging.

Melbourne/Perth based drummer Peter Evans is an up-and-coming drummer and composer in the jazz scene. In the past year, he has done performances with his own groups in both Melbourne and Perth and completed an Honours degree at the Victorian College of The Arts.  This year he is undertaking further study in the USA and is intending to record some of his own music. In this performance for the Perth Jazz Society’s Camelot Series, Peter will be exploring music from a diverse range of artists and genres in the open duo format of guitar and drums. Expect both original music and jazz interpretations of songs from popular artists such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones influenced by the sounds of country, blues, pop, and rock music..

Gabriel graduated from Bachelor of Jazz Performance course at WAAPA last year, receiving the Best Recitalist award. In 2013 he also performed at both the Perth and Melbourne International Jazz Festivals, traveled to New York City for two weeks to take part in a workshop hosted by NYU and was invited several times to play his own music at the Ellington Jazz Club, one of Perth’s only listening focused venues.

Marc Osborne is a talented and in demand saxophonist based in Perth, Western Australia. He has recently completed his First Class Honours in Jazz Performance at the prestigious West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Marc has performed and recorded with the best players on the local jazz scene, national artists such as Andrew Gander (Sydney) and James Morrsion and international artists such as Fred Wesley, George Garzone and Wilson Saoko.

Originally from Victoria, Luke Minness moved to Perth to complete his studies at WAAPA. Graduating in 2012 with a Bachelor degree in Jazz Performance, he has since played with well-known ensembles such as the Mace Francis Orchestra, WAYJO, the Jamess Cross Quintet amongst others.

Currently the artists in resident at The Claremont Hotel with his quartet as the leader of this ensemble. Involved in a dynamic brass band, Luke also plays regular gigs at The Ellington club under the Hornography banner. Other achievements include successful performances at The Laneway Lounge, as well as recording and touring with the JC5, and as a soloist.

2010 WAM Song of the Year nominee, pianist and composer Ben Matthews has shared the stage with many of Australia’s highly acclaimed jazz musicians (Katie Noonan, Libby Hammer, Ben Vanderwal to name a few). Ben’s passion for artistic expression through improvisation and composition lead him to begin learning jazz piano in 2007. In 2008 he began studying at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

With a luminous and introspective presence, Priscilla Gardner is a vocalist and composer in the Perth music scene. Priscilla has recently graduated with her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance this year. With a pure and haunting tone, Priscilla draws inspiration from artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Norma Winstone, Chet Baker and Billie Holiday. Recent performances include supporting renowned vocalist Victoria Newton, as well as having guest appearance at The Ellington and The Laneway Lounge.
