Jazz & Oyster Nights @ Camelot Outdoor Cinema – Interview Music

Interview Music is a trio comprised of Jeremy Thomson (guitar), Gabriel Fatin (keyboards) and Alex Reid (drums). Far from an average jazz trio, most of the repertoire is made up of pop songs that have been put through a rigorous deconstruction. They maintain the jazz aesthetic while exploring artists as diverse as Thom Yorke, Stevie Wonder, Tupac and Bruce Hornsby. Each song is given a transforming treatment, as the trio uses each element of the song as a plaything with endless possibilities. Using plenty of creativity, virtuosity and tongue-in-cheek humour, Interview Music is entertaining and engaging.

Alan Corbet Scholarship: Supporting the Future of Perth Jazz

James van de Ven - Alan Corbet Scholarship 2014 Winner

James van de Ven – Alan Corbet Scholarship 2014 Winner

It is nearly time to decide on this year’s winner of the Alan Corbet Scholarship (ACS). The Perth Jazz Society (PJS), in partnership with The Ellington, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra and JazzWA are running the ACS for its third year. Established in memory of Alan Corbet, the ACS seeks to support the development of an emerging West Australian jazz artist through the awarding of a $1000 scholarship, to contribute to the artistic development of the chosen applicant.

Alan Corbet (1964-2008) was well known and loved in the Perth jazz community. He brought a sense of purpose and vision and was a driving force of the WA jazz scene. The ACS continues in the same spirit, supporting young emerging jazz artists and helping to ensure a healthy future for West Australian jazz.

Last year’s scholarship winner was James van de Ven, a young an upcoming trombonist from Perth. With the scholarship money, James was able to fund his trip to the Dave Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

The Alan Corbet Scholarship was really beneficial to my studies. I was lucky enough to travel to the U.S.A. last year and attend workshops at the Dave Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. When facing the hefty cost of the program and international travel, the scholarship help me attend and learn from the program. I am very grateful for the assistance of the PJS and the Scholarship in assisting my travel and education.” – James van de Ven

If you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing him perform, you can see James at our Laneway session on the 25th of October. He will be tributing the great Melba Liston, the defining female trombonist of the big band era.

For details on how to apply for the Alan Corbet Scholarship, go to this link. Applications are due on the 31st of October.

Djuna Lee

Djuna Lee’s passion for music began at a young age, taking up violin at three and piano at eight before being drawn to the sound of the double bass. Size being an issue she had to wait until Year 6 to begin lessons at primary school. To her parents, the piccolo would have been a more practical choice, but even the thought of carting the bass to and from school on a golf buggy was not enough to discourage Djuna. Over the years, music has taken Djuna all around the world, having performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the World Expo in China and having had lessons in New York with renowned bass players Larry Grenadier and Scott Colley. Djuna further developed her sound and compositional style, learning from Chris Tarr, Tom O’Halloran and Jamie Oehlers as part of her Honours degree at WAAPA. She has also performed with Elbow Grease and her newly founded group, Before the Big Bang.

Having recently returned from Melbourne, double bassist, Djuna Lee will be joined by Shaun Rammers on saxophone and Greg Brenton on drums. Performing a mixture of originals that use melodic material as a basis for open form improvisations the trio explores the depths of improvised music inspired by Ornette Coleman, Tony Malaby, Ellery Eskelin, Mark Simmonds and Dave Ades.
