This month, the Perth Jazz Society present the second installment of our Live @ The Charles series! We are delighted to support two fine Perth acts for your enjoyment: First up for the night will be the Sam Hadlow Quintet, followed by our headliners, the Simon Jeans Quartet!
SIMON JEANS QUARTET
Guitarist and composer Simon Jeans has been a performer and band leader presenting original music to Perth Jazz Society audiences regularly over the last 25 years. A finalist in the 2007 Wangaratta National Jazz awards, he has been active on the Perth music scene since the early 1990’s as a guitarist in multiple styles, performing with artists such as James Morrison, Ernie Watts, Dale Barlow, Dave Samuels, the Pointer Sisters, Tom Burlinson, as well as WA Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Perth Jazz Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
Simon has recorded CDs with Memory of Elements, Michael Pigneguy, Thrust, Graham Wood, Hip Mo’ Toast, Salamander, Johannes Luebbers Dectet, Sian Brown, and is featured on “With A Little Help From My Friends” (charity album) and numerous JazzWA compilations (Simon Jeans Trio, SJ Quartet, Frames of Minds).
In September 2016, the Simon Jeans Quartet released its latest full-length CD “Spirograph”, featuring the talents of Jamie Oehlers (tenor & soprano saxophones), Karl Florisson (double bass) & Daniel Susnjar (drums & percussion).
Following his previous release (powerhouse fusion trio thumpR’s 2011 CD “Echo Papa Alphabet”), Simon Jeans’ latest recording features an eclectic range of genres ranging from straight ahead to free jazz, contemporary grooves, ballads and burners. “Spirograph” features original compositions written just prior to recording and as far back as the early 90’s, one (or two?) surprise cover tunes, and stellar performances from an all-star ensemble.
Recorded by Kieran Kenderessy and mastered by Grammy award winner Dave Darlington, “Spirograph” will be available for purchase on the night.
