In honour of the women of jazz James van de Ven will be paying tribute to the great Melba Liston. As the defining female trombonist of the big band era Liston has an incredible body of work to reflect on and appreciate both from a musical and political/cultural standpoint. During the showcase van de Ven will present a varied program that demonstrates the different aspects of Liston’s career showing her varied strengths as a composer, arranger and instrumentalist. Also featured will be some originals and arrangements from van de Ven and his ensemble.
