Penny King Quintet featuring Carl Mackey: ‘Journey’ relaunch
Penny King has been one of Western Australia’s leading jazz vocalists for nearly 20 years. She regular plays sell out shows at Perth’s finest music venue, The Ellington Jazz Club. Most recently performing her Joni Mitchell tribute at the 2015 Perth International Jazz festival, she has also been featured at the 2013 Festival, and has appeared at Rottnest’s ‘Jazz on the Rock Festival’, the York Jazz Festival, the Beaufort St. Festival, Fremantle International Jazz Festival and the Jazz By The Bay Festival, Dunsborough.
Penny has been a featured vocalist with the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, through which she has had opportunities to sing along side such luminaries as James Morrison and Dale Barlow.
Penny’s position as vocal tutor in the jazz department at WAAPA is testament to her respected place in the Perth Jazz community. With influences ranging from the greats such as Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan, through to contemporary jazz vocalists Tierney Sutton and Alison Wedding, and singer songwriters Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, Penny’s shows glide seamlessly through musical genres, whilst always staying firmly rooted in jazz.
Penny’s quintet’s debut album ‘Journey’ was released in December 2013, and was shortlisted for best Australian jazz vocal album at the 2014 Bell awards. The album features both original compositions, and original arrangements of jazz and contemporary standards. This evening’s performance will revisit the music featured on the album, as well as some new tunes and arrangements. Featuring the outstanding musician’s that Penny recorded the album with; Tom O’Halloran on piano, Pete Jeavons on bass, Michael Perkins on drums and, in a flying visit back to Perth, Carl Mackey on tenor saxophone.
